Simple is good

Ya know...sometimes simple is just better.

Yesterday, shot a catalog for a client that distributes yarn all over the planet. All those knitting needles were put into action when the economy went all broke and stuff. Anyway, here is a shot I did using a small strobe fired through a "brolly" (love those things!). Just a wee bit of balancing with daylight and it looks real sweet. The strobe gave us a real pop on the detail which is what the client asked we concentrate on.

*Side note: this is Amanda. First ever photo shoot.

Simple. Don't complicate.

Cheers and Merry Christmas!

Shooting ads is fun!

This is from my dance/ballet catalog. We shoot ads every once in a while but they seem to be wanting more of them. We shot this yesterday after dragging "stuff" from out in the studio yard to grunge the shot up.

This was pretty simple; two ProFoto heads, one each in a Mole-Richardson fresnel.

Fun!

Horses!

Good Sunday all!

I was assigned to shoot a photo essay on the horse industry in central Alabama by a local magazine. I thought I'd post a few of the intial shots here before the magazine gets them. Publication date is to be the February issue of Birmingham Metro Magazine.

Turkey Day!

Oh what the heck!

With a houseful of family, Elaine and I decided to do a nice menu and I figured I'd just share it with everyone.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving . . . keeping in touch!

Often times I show a shot here and a shot there of my dance/team/ballet shoots for my Florida client. This time, I figured I'd show a final shot. Here's an image that was used as a full page ad in a trade magazine. It's basically a bright white background with an open strobe for the main light.

Sometimes the most simple set up yields very nice result.

Cheers!

Nov 18 . . . Thursday night . . .

Sorry for missing my post on Sunday. I was in my Ft Lauderdale FL studio shooting for a dance catalog.

There were so many shots over the two days (each needing a gray card according to client wants) that I decided to have some fun with them. I've posted here a few of my favorites out of the hundred some odd we shot.

Hope you like them! They are useful as well as fun.

Cheers!

Yoga

I was assigned to photograph a yoga instructor at her home based yoga studio for a Birmingham (AL) magazine. This was done with nothing but ambient lighting, using a very long exposere (for this kind of thing) and turned out to have the very look I envisioned . . . warm and contemplative.

Gray Card Menagerie

I"ve seen a few folks post their gray card shots and I thought I'd do the same much to the chagrin to my trusty assistant, Katie (such a good sport).

So...here are the gray cards from my last shoot (photo'ing doctors makes one do strange things). I'll do this every once in a while if not to entertain you, but for sure to make Katie think I am surely a crazy boss.

Cheers!

Oct 25

Good morning all!

Just got back from St Louis where I was assigned to provide images for a corporate branding effort for the biggest hospital group there. Anyone that's done these kind of things knows you have to be quick on your feet since doctors times are tightly controlled.

Here are a few things we shot this week. I'd estimate the average time we had with each doctor was between 5 and 10 minutes (excluding set up).

Cheers!

New Images

Good morning all! Sunny, breezy and a balmy 42 degrees in Birmingham!

Here are some samples of recent work. Not something done recently but I revisited these raw images, submitted them to an art director in Baltimore and these shots will be offered to publications that need beauty editorial content. Hope you like them as much as I enjoyed making them.

Got quesitons? Send them :-)

Ft. Lauderdale Studio

Hi all!  Sorry I've not posted in a great while.  Been stupid busy.

So...after 26 years in the same studio, I finally had to move.  The landlord decided to move some manufacturing tennants in and their chemical smells just drove us out of there.

So...seems that OMP has a studio.  They had originally intended to make it a rental place like the SoBe ones.  That didn't take off as much as intended, so when a friend and colleague from Birmingham mentioned the OMP studio, I called to take a look and see if I could make a deal there.  I met Brett and he took all four of us in their studio and allowed us to make some major changes in the studio layout.  I've attached a photo of the construction of the cyc wall, which they did not have.

So...gotta go back soon to finish painting and organizing.  I have a Swim & Sport shoot coming up do gotta get it ready for that.  This upcoming week, I have another trip to Green Bay Wisconsin to shoot for my hospital client there.  Always enjoy that.  Super people to work for. I will be at the Alabama Horse Association meet-up next week to shoot for them.  Should be fun as it's a fun group and there is another assignment for a yet as un-named new client in Tennessee.

I've attached a pic of the studio construction...stay tuned as when it's all finished, I'll do some proper pictures not from my iPhone

Bye fer now!
